When I was little and living in Scotland I don't think pumpkins reached our neck of the wood - way too exotic for south west Scotland in the 70s!  Instead I have memories of my dad almost requiring a hammer and chisel to  get out the inside of a turnip attempting to create the same effect as what seems a lot easier a vegetable to deal with.  At friends on Monday afternoon we had a choice of many pumpkins that their dad happily carved out based on some pretty specific requests.
