How to celebrate a big birthday

For once I am not going to talk about something to do with kids ... although it did involve them.  Mr P turned 40 at the weekend (thank you Kate & Wills for making his big birthday celebration last that bit longer with the extra day off).  As you might expect if you've read this blog for a while was quite a homemade affair in many respects.  An illustration of the kids by the brilliant Ashley Goldberg from me, a painted canvas created by Ava and Jonah and some extra special cupcakes.  Shhh, don't tell anyone but Mr P is rather partial to the odd game (or ten) of Angry Bird so I decided that a cake (or many cupcakes) depicting those fluttering characters was mighty apt for him.  With a little help from my young friends - Birdy Blue, Birdy Red and Birdy Yellow and Piggy Green (I have no idea what they are called!) were sculpted out of Royal Icing (and some marshmallow, dried apricot and chocolate drops added in for good measure too).  thanks to The Crafting Chicks Blog for instructions and with some creative input (read that as a little help and a lot of eating of icing) from a 3 and 5 year old the cakes were made.
